Checkpoint: Old Town Square

The Old Town Square, originally the Great Square, covers an area of more than 9,000 m2. The so-called Royal Route passes through here.

The square was a place of important events. After the uprising on June 21, 1621, 27 Czech lords were executed in front of the town hall. This event is commemorated by 27 white crosses in the paving of the square.

The world-famous astronomical clock at the Old Town Hall was created at the beginning of the 15th century by the watchmaker Mikuláš z Kadaně according to the design of Jan Šindel, and in 1490 it was modified by the watchmaker Master Hanuš.

In the years 1838–1848, the neo-Gothic extension of the Old Town Hall was built. During the Prague Uprising in May 1945, the town hall was severely damaged by the bombing of German troops. The neo-Gothic extension had to be demolished. A small park with a memorial to the victims of the uprising you are currently in stands in its original place.
